Former Edinburgh MP, Tommy Sheppard, has applied for a place on the SNP list for Lothians in The Scottish Parliament elections on 7 May.
The deadline for nominations has now closed, and Mr Sheppard says that a majority of constituencies nominated him for a ballot that will now go to members to decide the candidate spot.
Tommy Sheppard said: “I’m delighted to have received so much support from members and branches right across the region.
“This campaign is an opportunity to put independence front and centre of the decisions about Scotland’s future.
“I’ve spoken to a huge number of members who have encouraged me to stand and I hope I can help turbo charge our campaign across the region to win as many seats as possible to achieve the strongest possible mandate for an independent Scotland, free of Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage.”
The ballot for members opens on 30 January and close on 13 February. The full list will be announced shortly afterwards.
Tommy Sheppard was the MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh but lost the seat in the General Election 2024 to Labour’s Chris Murray.
