Fife Flyers suffered back-to-back defeats on the road this weekend. Another 120 minutes of ice hockey with no reward, piling pressure on them to make the end-of-season play-offs.
They remain in ninth spot and are now on 18 points from 34 games and Sunday’s 7-2 defeat at Coventry Blaze in a key basement clash was a massive blow. The Kirkcaldy club were edged 4-3 at Elite League title-chasers, Cardiff Devils, on Saturday.
The reverse before 2,170 fans at Coventry’s SkyDome Arena followed 4-0 second period, that’s despite David Booth opening the scoring after 1min 53sec with Simon Despres assisting.
Coventry hit back after 12min 34sec when David Clements netted and then edged ahead 2-1 when Jordan Power found the net at 16min 29sec.
Back came Flyers and Keaton Jameson was set-up by Logan Neilson to level at 2-2 on 17min 19sec, but Josh Winquist was sent to the sin bin for tripping and Blaze capitalised when William Boysen scored with 14 seconds of the session remaining.
The flood gates opened when Jere Vertanen scored after 26min 44sec for the home side to make it 4-2 and it became 5-2 on 28min 45sec when Matthew Gleason netted.
The next goal arrived on 31minutes when Boysen scored and it became 7-2 when Grant Mismash counted at 38min 46sec.
Fife coach Jamie Russell removed Shane Owen from the nets at the start of the final session, Andrew Little taking over, but there was no more scoring.
