David Gray delighted with ‘statement win’ over the league leaders

Hibs head coach David Gray was “delighted for everyone” after Hibs beat Hearts in the Christmas Derby.

Hibs had a terrific start to the game and found themselves 3-0 up within the first 50 minutes thanks to goals from Jamie McGrath, Josh Campbell and Kieron Bowie.

There was a late scare as Hearts scored twice in the last 15 minutes, but Gray’s man held firm to seal all three points and a derby victory!

When speaking after the game, Gray was delighted with the victory.

“I’m really pleased and delighted for everyone involved. These are special games to be involved in, and you could see that with the scenes at the end.

“I would’ve liked it to be a wee bit more comfortable because of the level of performance we put in for large periods of the game.

“I was talking about us wanting a statement win, and we made sure we got that today. I certainly got everything from the players, the atmosphere was fantastic, and this has to be something we can build on.”

Hibs were excellent for large parts of the game with big moments going their way. Gray gave his thoughts on the performance.

“We scored when we were on top, which is something in recent weeks we haven’t done. When you are on top you need to take your chances and we did that today, and put ourselves in a good position.

“I was delighted with the way we started the second half. We expected Hearts to come out and have a reaction, and to have a real go, but we came out really well and really aggressive again to make it 3-0 up. We had more opportunities to make it four and really kill the game off.

“Hearts scored out of nothing, and as soon as they got one, they brought all their attackers on to try and change the game. They got their second goal, and from that point, you’re relying with the players on the pitch to stand up and be counted.

“We went from a position of real control to being pegged back, and our goalkeeper made a huge save to get the win over the line.

“It was a result we full deserved for everything the players put into the game. It’s the half way point of the season, and we have to build on it. We have to be more consistent with our results. We should be picking up more points consistently and that’s the challenge, but we got what we deserved today.”
