Tobermory, Scotland, has captured the imagination of travellers worldwide by securing a spot among the globe’s top 25 most colourful destinations – beating many famous European rivals.
A groundbreaking scientific study, commissioned by UK travel insurance provider Staysure, used cutting-edge image processing software to create a “ChromaTravel Index,” ranking destinations on colour saturation, vibrancy, and hue variation. Tobermory scored an impressive 65/100, landing 11th place globally and outshining some well-known Mediterranean hotspots.

The west coast town of Tobermory is famed for its harbour lined with brightly painted houses. These cheerful buildings, in shades of red, yellow, blue, and black, were originally painted to help fishermen spot their homes and local businesses from the sea – but today they’re iconic, attracting photographers, families, and television crews alike.
The waterfront even served as the filming location for the beloved children’s series Balamory.
“Tobermory’s colourful waterfront brings a burst of joy to Scotland’s west coast, creating a sense of warmth and welcome even on the coldest days,” explains colour psychology expert Karen Haller, who supported the research.
“Brightly painted houses made it easier for fishermen to spot their homes and local businesses from the harbour or while out at sea, especially in misty or overcast weather. Painted in strong red, yellow, blue and black, the buildings have become iconic alongside the harbourfront and even served as the filming location for the television series Balamory. Many guidebooks and travel resources describe them as adding notable cheer to the town during its long, grey winters.”
