Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer has ended Ian Murray’s tenure as Scottish Secretary in a reshuffle on Friday.
Ian Murray MP has represented Edinburgh South since 2010. At once time he was the only Labour MP in Scotland, and is the longest serving of all the Scottish Labour MPs.
The other Labour MPs in Scotland include Douglas Alexander who is Minister of State for Department for Business and Trade and MP for Lothian East. Mr Alexander was previously Secretary of State for Scotland in 2006 during the Blair government.
Just yesterday the Prime Minister was in Scotland with Mr Murray visiting BAE systems to further underline the news about Norway commissioning a deal on warships with the UK which the UK Government said would secure 2,000 jobs on the Clyde.
The Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned from government earlier today following the discovery that she had paid insufficient stamp duty land tax (SDLT) on a second property. Since then several announcements have been made.
Downing Street shared a handwritten letter from the Prime Minister to Ms Rayner following her resignation in which he said he was very sad about the resignation and her time in three roles – as deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State and deputy leader of the Labour Party was ending “in this way”. He signed off the letter “My very best wishes and with real sadness”.
