A 29-year-old man who was viciously assaulted by a group of teenagers who filmed the attack and shared it online has been left traumatised by the incident.
The victim, a PhD student at Edinburgh University boarded a number 113 bus near the Musselburgh Racecourse around 4.30pm on Saturday 31 August 2025.
When the bus reached Fisherrow Harbour he was verbally abused and subjected to an unprovoked attacked by four youths while another filmed the incident on a mobile phone.
The attack which took place on the upper deck of the bus left him bloodied with cuts and bruises to his face, requiring hospital treatment.
Incredibly, after leaving the Royal Infirmary, he took another bus and was approached by two teenage girls who recognised him having seen the video which had been shared online.
He told The Edinburgh Reporter: “My sight has been slightly affected following the incident and I sometimes feel dizzy but generally speaking I’m fine. However when I see groups of teenagers in the street I feel very defensive.
“I think there were seven teenagers aged 13-17 involved including two girls. I can’t believe that this happened in broad daylight.
“If anyone else who was on the bus witnessed the assault and would be willing to testify, I would ask them to contact the police who are investigating.”
A 14-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the incident and police say that their enquiries are ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Sunday, 31 August, 2025, we received a report of an assault on a bus in the High Street area of Musselburgh.
“Officers attended and a 29-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.
“A 14-year-old male youth has been charged in connection and a report will be submitted to the relevant authorities.
“Enquiries remain ongoing.”
