Tonight (Monday 22 September 2025) will see former Hibernian player Caroline Weir and Napoli’s Scott McTominay compete against the world’s best at the 2025 Ballon D’Or awards.
Caroline Weir becomes the first ever Scot to be nominated for the Ballon D’Or Féminin, which was first presented in 2018. She is also on a shortlist of 30 for the prestigious individual award.
Weir – who showed incredible strength to battle back after nine months out with an ACL injury – enjoyed another strong campaign for Real Madrid, scoring in her comeback match before going on to net 14 times in all competitions as they finished 2nd in La Liga F.
Those goals saw her become the highest scorer in the Spanish club’s history. She has won 112 caps and scored 19 goals for Scotland, and also represented her country at two major tournaments, UEFA EURO 2017 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.
Midfielder Scott McTominay has become the first male player to be nominated since Ally McCoist was up for the 1987 award, with his name appearing on a list of 30 nominees published by magazine France Football last month. He has been rewarded after a stellar first year in Italy, where he scored 12 league goals as Napoli won the Serie A title on the last day of the season.
The nomination is also recognition of McTominay’s fine form for his country. A virtual ever-present since his debut in 2018, he represented Scotland at both UEFA EURO 2020 and UEFA EURO 2024, while his influence on the national side has grown in recent years, emphasised by a return of 11 goals in the past 26 internationals.
Legendary forward Denis Law, who sadly passed away earlier this year, remains the sole Scot to win the Ballon D’Or, collecting the award in 1964. Law was nominated for the award on a remarkable seven occasions, while Kenny Dalglish was also on the shortlist six times.
The ceremony will be available to watch live on TNT Sports and Discovery+, while also being streamed on L’Équipe’s YouTube channel on the evening of Monday, 22 September.
