The city’s new Voi cycle hire scheme opens today
There will be 50 bikes for hire in the city centre from today with up to 800 e-bikes eventually placed around the city centre.
As we looked at the map overnight there were more bikes appearing all the time – the first two appeared on New Street by 6pm on Tuesday which is very convenient for anyone working at the council offices there.
If you hire a bike today then please tag the photo on social media with our account and we will share any that we see.

Children’s Hearings Scotland recruiting volunteer panel members
Scotland’s unique Children’s Hearings System is seeking new volunteer Panel Members in West Lothian to make decisions in the interests of infants, children and young people.
Applications to become a Panel Member are open from 1 September to 6 October.
At Collective Gallery this Sunday
The Collective Gala which takes place this Sunday invites audiences of all ages to experience Collective’s unique site on Calton Hill and engage with the organisation’s wide-ranging programmes.
This year’s event offers the opportunity to explore newly commissioned artworks by Scottish artists, join behind-the-scenes tours, shop with local makers, sample Edinburgh’s new Cafe Calton, and enjoy creative play sessions for children.
The day will culminate in a celebratory procession inspired by Gala traditions – led by multi-disciplinary artist and singer Quinie and visual artist Seamus Killick.
The procession will be followed by a live music performance by Scottish artist and performer Quinie, also known as Josie Vallely, whose multi-disciplinary practice blends folk traditions, walking, song, storytelling and visual art to explore Scots language, memory, land and belonging.
Polar explorer to deliver talk in Edinburgh
Preset Chandi will deliver a talk in Edinburgh to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) on 17 September entitled South Pole Solo : Grit and Ice. She has completed three solo expeditions in just over three years earning four Guinness World Records on the way. She will share her journey of learning preparation and self-discovery.
RSGS Chief Executive Mike Robinson said: “There could be no one better to kick off our Inspiring People talks programme for the 2025–26 season. Preet’s adventures perfectly embody what the series is about: bringing people together through powerful stories that inspire and uplift. Her talk sets the tone for an exciting season ahead, one that will take us all over the world in many different ways, through adventure, science, exploration, and human resilience.”
RSGS Inspiring People talks are open to all: tickets are free for RSGS Members, Students and U18s and £15 for general admission. Tickets are available to book online in advance at rsgs.org/events and are also available at the door.
Preet’s talk in Edinburgh begins at 2:15pm on 17th September at 40 George Square, Lecture Theatre C, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, EH8 9JX.
