Stevie Corsar netted an impressive 16 fish in the morning session of the Scottish National Fly Fishing League, Premier Division, at Burnhouse Lochan near Bonnybridge.
But the Aberdeenshire-based angler finished with 12 fish in the net after the afternoon session and had to be content with second position in the hotly-contested event held in settled weather and mild conditions.
However, Corsar still leads the overall event with Craig Brown second and Fife-based Rab Maxwell third as the chase for places in Scotland’s World, European and Five Nations team hots up.
For the record, Maxwell from Cupar was second in the morning session at Burnhouse with nine fish and Brown third with eight. The afternoon session saw a re-shuffle with Bob Robertson taking first place with 15 fish, Corsar from Inverurie was second with 12 and Brown third with nine fish.
The 16 anglers on duty returned 185 trout for an impressive 11.5 rod average on the day.
Archie Ferguson reports that tactics on the day varied. Anglers were presented with rising fish from the off and dries played a big part in catch returns.
A number of fish, he added, were also landed using sinking line tactics, fast or slow intermediates, with a variety of lures and naturals also playing their part.
Ferguson, press officer for the event, added: “The Scottish National Fly Fishing League is open to any Scottish angler, providing they are a member of Scottish Anglers National Association (SANA).
“It is the mechanism for selecting Scotland’s World, European, Five Nations and World Masters teams and it is split over two leagues, First and Premier.
“There are three promotions from the first to the premier and three demotions from the premier.”
Ferguson confirmed that there is currently a waiting list but prospective members can accrue non-fishing points to secure a place in the First Division.
