As part of the EIF’s policy of bringing orchestras to Edinburgh for multiple concerts (for the purposes of sustainability), this week it is the turn of Ilumina, the São Paulo-based artist collective founded by the American violist Jennifer Stumm.

This was a personal choice by Festival Director, Nicola Benedetti, and part of the innovative beanbag concert series where the seats in the stalls are removed an replaced with beanbags to provide a more interactive and relaxed musical experience.

“In the Light of Shadow” spanned a variety of music from French baroque to Afro-samba. The artists in beautifully coloured outfits provided as concert involving movement and expressive playing as well as virtuoso performance. Pieces included work by Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner, Jean-Baptiste Lully, György Kurtág, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

The entire recital exuded joy. I could not help but leave with a broad grin on my face.
