Stanley Dunlop, the heart and soul of North Edinburgh’s Starbank Park has died, aged 93.

Known affectionately as Stan, Mr Dunlop lived for nearly 50 years in the listed building in the centre of the walled garden.

Warm, spirited, knowledgeable and kind, the retired council worker was a key figure in the Friends of Starbank Park, the volunteer-led, charitable organisation which now oversees the park.

Even in his 90s, Stan worked hard tending to the gardens, the animals and the birds. Children loved him, and he could often be seen in rapt conversation with a passing toddler, or their parent.

Mr Dunlop is survived by his son, Craig, from his first marriage, and by his much loved cat, Smokey, who has been rehomed.

A representative of the Friends of Starbank Park said: “All of us at the park are devastated with the loss of Stan. We shared some very good times.

“We will endeavour to keep Starbank Park Gardens looking spectacular for Stan and plan bursting summer colour in Dahlias and Gladioli to celebrate Stan’s life. He was an incredible friend to so many people as he was a fantastic listener and interested in people. We will all miss Stan’s infectious smile.”

Details of Mr Dunlop’s funeral have not yet been released.
