Doubtfire Gallery in Stockbridge, is to open its first new exhibition of the season On a Spring tide by expressive landscape artists, Sarah Knox and Esther Donaldson.

Sarah and Esther’s paintings are oils on canvas or panel and the exhibition runs from 6 March – 6 April 2024 with a Meet the Artists event on Saturday 9 March from 2 – 4pm.

Renowned for her paintings of wild places in Scotland, Sarah makes multiple drawings and paintings outside, to capture the sensation of landscape with brush and paint.

She said: “When painting is going well it feels like I am flying. Working en plein air produces magical and fluid mark-making.”

In her Edinburgh studio she hones those visual field notes by working in oil on canvas, with washes of medium to reveal the atmosphere and interplay of light and space.

Sarah added that she was excited to exhibit this new work at Doubtfire Gallery, and to find that she shares common themes and threads with her co-exhibitor Esther Donaldson.

Both artists are inspired to explore the erosion of the coastal landscapes around them. Esther’s body of work focuses on the natural forms of the coastline and their relationship to the man-made structures where she lives in Port Seton.

Esther said: “I utilise such structures as the harbour, footpaths, and buildings, which create divisions of colour and geometric forms against the natural flow of the land as it meanders along the coast. In my practice I seek to give a sense of history and place of the coastline of Scotland, as it constantly changes and is altered by nature and man.”

Doubtfire Gallery is open Wednesday to Sundays from 12 – 4pm and opens at other times by arrangement www.doubtfiregallery.com

Sarah Knox is an Edinburgh artist; her drawings and paintings occupy a liminal realm between an observed encounter and her memory of a place. Sarah exhibits widely with SSA, VAS and RSW and was honoured to represent Scotland in Fabriano in Acquarello international watercolour exhibition in Italy 2021-2023. Sarah was delighted to win VACMA awards 2023 and 2024 to develop her work in new directions.

Esther Donaldson is based in East Lothian and has exhibited at RSA, SSA, RSW and Royal Academy summer exhibition with her work selected for the Academicians favourites list. In 2018 she was awarded House of an Art Lover exhibition by RSW and in 2019 was elected a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists.
