Edinburgh’s Chinese New Year Festival will take place from Thursday 8 to Tuesday 13 February 2024 to mark the Year of the Dragon. 

Symbolising power, nobleness, honour, luck and success in traditional Chinese Culture, The Year of the Dragon starts on 10 February and will be celebrated with a full programme of events and activities. 

  • Chinese New Year Concert
  • A staple in Edinburgh’s calendar is the long-enjoyed Chinese New Year Concert at Usher Hall: say farewell to the Year of the Rabbit, and warmly usher in the Year of the Dragon.
  • Combining the best of Scottish and Chinese culture, we’re delighted to present spirited Highland dancing, the showstopping Peking Opera, and the elegant Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra.
  • 5.30 to 7.00pm Dragon and Lion Dance, Tai Chi, Bagpipe and more performances outside Usher Hall
  • 7.30pm The Concert

  • The Mound Chinese New Year Celebration
  • 4 February 2024
  • Special cultural events with the theme of traditional Chinese New Year celebrations, including lion and dragon dance, waist drum celebration, magnificent long fan dance, Chinese folk music, children’s dance, Hanfu stories and audience interaction, red envelope games and Ceilidh, to experience the Chinese New Year together.
  • The events are free of charge and open to the public.
  • Year of the Dragon at Camera Obscura & World of Illusions
  • The building near Castlehill is being lit up red to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Some exhibits will also be decorated.

Edinburgh’s Chinese New Year Festival is supported by Heriot-Watt University and Hainan Airlines and co-ordinated by Edinburgh Tourism Action Group (ETAG) as part of its China Ready initiative. It has become the largest celebration of its kind in Scotland since its inception in 2019. 

The full programme of events will be announced in early February 2024.
