Warrender girls have won the Scottish under-15 water polo cup after a day of drama at Strathclyde University Pool.

The capital club, who were augmented by three players from West Edinburgh Stingrays, defeated Dunfermline in a final which went to a penalty shoot-out after the teams had finished level at 9-9.

Ultimately it was Warrender who kept their composure with Emily Lake, 12, and Hanna Hablicsek, 14, scoring before 11-year-old Ella Stubbs clinched a 3-2 shoot-out win.

Julia Kerr, who has coached the Warrender girls for the past six years having been introduced to the sport by her daughter, said: “I don’t think I have ever been so nervous.

“In a round-robin tie against Dunfermline, whom we had never beaten, we were trailing by three points inside the fourth (and final) quarter but recovered to win 8-5.”
