Lidl have responded to a survey which they commissioned by offering free coal to help younger people keep up the tradition of first footing.

The supermarket’s research showed that older generations have stopped going out first footing and only a fifth of younger people who plan to first foot this year.

As a way of encouraging tradition Lidl will offer free coal on Saturday to shoppers to take with them when first footing and the supermarket also have some Hogmanay offers in their Edinburgh stores.

Lidl’s Deluxe Crisps in festive flavours like Lobster Cocktail, Turkey & Sage and Onion Stuffing and Camembert & Hot Honey (£1.15) could become the new ways of wishing friends and family a prosperous New Year.
