UCI Road World Championships

You have been warned. There will be cycling in the city in the next week or so. But is anyone else still worried about the potholes? An event in Cambridgeshire was cancelled this week due to the danger posed by potholes – and that involved amateur riders. There is still a massive crater at the foot of The Mound, and nobody has bothered to fix it ahead of the elite men hurtling down the hill there.

The Men’s Elite road race, takes place on Sunday 6 August, beginning from Arthur’s Seat, a suitably awe-inspiring start for the world’s finest riders and provides a taste of the rich history to follow.

From there, the riders pass through Edinburgh’s Old Town pass by Edinburgh Castle where the Tattoo will be in full swing.

What follows will be one of the most photogenic and memorable images of the entire road race as the riders cross Queensferry Crossing, one of the three bridges connecting Edinburgh to Fife.

Once the riders have passed the bridges they will roll on past Falkirk, Bonnybridge, Denny and Fintry, taking in views which include the spectacular Kelpies. The riders then climb the Crow Road, a 5.8km ascent with an average gradient of 4%. This could be a key section where the national teams will look to test their competition.

From here, they’ll descend into the Glasgow finishing circuit. This is the finishing circuit for the Women Elite road race (which encompasses the Women’s Under 23 road race), on Sunday 13 August, and the Men’s Under 23 road race, on Saturday 12 August.

But first could somebody fix the potholes in Edinburgh?

Fringe by the Sea

Everything does not just happen in the city in August. There is a huge move to the seaside from 4 to 13 August when big names such as Maggie O’Farrell, Dara O’Briain, Denise Mina, Peat & Diesel and Dylan Moran all feature on a wide programme of events.
