When cars using the roads and streets in the city were most probably those used by key workers, The City of Edinburgh Council has confirmed that they continued to operate all the bus lanes, and impose fines too.

The council has collected almost ÂŁ300,000 in fines in the four months for which we have obtained data.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor, Lesley Macinnes, explained to The Edinburgh Reporter: “We continued to operate bus lanes as normal throughout lockdown to help maintain efficient, reliable public transport services for key workers and emergency services vehicles. Bus lanes also help ensure road safety for cyclists and motorcyclists, who benefit from controls, which was particularly important as lockdown restrictions were eased and the volume of traffic began to increase on our roads.”

March                 ÂŁ123,495.46

April                    ÂŁ64,624.92

May                     ÂŁ44,534.19

June                    ÂŁ67,973.33

In relation to one particular bus lane:

There were 632 Bus Lane Charge Notices (BLCNs) issued in South Gyle Broadway between 23rd March, 2020 and 30th June, 2020.

From the 632 BLCNs issued in South Gyle Broadway, we have received ÂŁ17,610 in revenue, to date.

As you may imagine one of our readers alerted us to the particular bus lane where he himself was fined. He thinks the council was behaving in an ‘insensitive and immoral way’ by continuing to collect these fines – presumably some from key workers. If that was you then do get in touch and let us know about it.
