Green councillor and co-convener Alys Mumford has tabled a motion to close part of Edinburgh’s New Town to through traffic until Princes Street is reopened.
Ms Mumford has tabled the motion before next week’s full council meeting making the ask in a bid to prioritise public transport and ease congestion.
Under the group’s proposal, New Town between Princes Street, Queen Street, Frederick Street and Charlotte Square would be closed to all but local traffic.
In the motion, Cllr Mumford has also asked the council explore having the Voi bike-share scheme add more bikes and parking spaces in the city during the disruption.
She has also asked that exploration be made of extended or added bus services until the situation is resolved.
The motion also asks for a compulsory purchase of the Debenhams site, where the fire took place, to be explored.
It states multiple owners being involved with the property could slow down the process of ‘re-construction or redevelopment’ of the site.
Council leader Jane Meagher has stated she expects Princes Street to be reopened by the end of August if calm weather conditions continue.
Councillors will consider the motion at next week’s full council meeting.
