Murrayfield DAFS winning start to the season was brought to an abrupt end after falling to a 45 run loss to visiting Freuchie.

Home Skipper Phil Hawkins once again won the toss and asked the opposition to bat first. After a steady start by the Freuchie openers Brad Peter got both of them. New overseas signing for Freuchie Nenhunzi immediately showed his attacking intent showing little respect for the Murrayfield DAFS bowling attack hitting them to all parts with a quickfire 42 from 33 balls. A mini collapse after his departure left Freuchie on 92-6 before a good partnership between Dale Cowan and Jock Wallace helped get the score up to 143 before they were all out in the 41st over. Pick of the bowlers for Murrayfield DAFS was Anand “Batman” Venkatesh taking 3-23 off his 10.

In reply Murrayfield DAFS made a stuttering start falling to 15-3 with 2 wickets for Dale Cowan and Robbie Wright. Ash Rhode and Gavin Poole dug in for the hosts in the wake of some more good bowling from the visitors openers and when S Birrell and Dave Cowan were brought into the attack it was Dave Cowan who got the vital wicket of Rhode who edged behind to the impressive Nenhunzi.

Sam Fergusson came to the crease and both himself and Poole were very watchful with the next 10 only going for 17. However with Poole being bowled by an excellent ball from Dave Cowan the collapse began. Fergusson falling next when very unfortunately dragging onto his own stumps. The next 2 came and went leaving Murrayfield DAFS reeling on 70-8. Skipper Phil Hawkins had a couple of decent partnerships with Brad Peter and Neil Yelland but when the latter fell the game was all over with Murrayfield making only 98 and losing by 45 runs.

Some comments from the day:

“Unfortunately this was a really bad day at the office with both bat and ball. Our bowling was a long way off the usual high standards we have particularly at RoseburnĀ  and there were too many of our batsmen that needlessly gave their wickets away”

“Credit to way that Freuchie bowled at us. If we could have shown the discipline that some of their bowlers did then we would probably been looking at a much smaller total to chase.

“Nenhunzi was very impressive with the bat and gloves and must be one to watch out for in future weeks”

“We will dust ourselves off and look for a much improved performance away at Dunnikier next Saturday.”
