A community food project has been pedalling its way quietly across Edinburgh for the past year under the title “Fork in the Road”. It refers to a fork for eating with and the forks of a bicycle towing a colourful trailer which opens out into a mobile kitchen.
It’s all the work of a young Edinburgh artist Morvern Odling. She was inspired by the bike kitchens of the Spanish capital Madrid. She’s adapted the design, making the bike and trailer much lighter, to suit the hills of Edinburgh. So far, the kitchen has served meals at community events in Leith, Craigmillar, the Meadows and Wester Hailes.
Now a 130-page booklet has
been published giving full instructions on how to build your own bike kitchen
and suggesting recipes for a whole range of healthy meals. The book has been published under the “Open
Source” licence which allows anyone to use its contents freely, provided the
source is acknowledged. And the whole “Fork in the Road” project has been
sponsored by the National Lottery.
“Although each workshop, meal and event has been different,” said Morvern,” the core values of the project remain the same: explore food, share experiences, enjoy the outdoors and celebrate community.”
Having run the project for the first year, Morvern is now handing over to Lisa Nowak at the Edinburgh Tool Library. The next event is at Bridgend Farmhouse, 41 Old Dalkeith Road, EH16 4TE on Sunday 17th March. See further details:www.edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk/fork-in-the-road Or www.bridgendfarmhouse.org.uk
