A number of children suffered minor superficial injuries following the partial collapse of a ceiling at Tranent Church Hall in Tranent, East Lothian, shortly before 7pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services attended the scene and there were no reports of any serious injuries.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that it was due to plaster falling from the ceiling rather than a structural collapse.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in East Lothian were called to an address in Church Street, Tranent, at around 6.55pm following reports that a portion of the building’s roof had collapsed.

“Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service attended.

“There are no serious injuries.”

A Church of Scotland spokesman said: “We have met with the Health and Safety executive this morning and the building will be closed until further notice.
“We are very thankful that the injuries sustained were not more serious and we hope the children are now recovering. Our prayers are with everyone who was hurt or affected by this incident.”
