Murrayfield Racers bosses say they are “overwhelmed” by the response from the community and local businesses to the prospect of a new ice hockey team in Edinburgh.

Racers open their fixtures later this month with a challenge double-header against Dundee Comets on Tayside on Saturday, August 25 (7pm), and in Edinburgh on Sunday, August 26 (6pm).

And Racers’ shareholder Kenny McLean said that businessmen and women have come forward without prompting to express an interest in backing the team.

The club, he said, are working with the management of Murrayfield Ice Rink to finish a new sponsors lounge which will be in a prime location in the rink behind one of the goals.

McLean revealed that a major headline sponsor should be unveiled soon.

And he also confirmed that the board have been overwhelmed by the amount of interest shown by potential fans and by the attendance at the first Fans Forum on Sunday.

McLean said: “We have not yet gone out to look for sponsors yet, but the amount of people who have come to us to say they can help has been immense.

“We already have various sponsors lined up and we have a mainline sponsor who will be announced in the next few days.

“The legal people are tying up all the loose ends as we speak.”
He added: “We would expect the sponsors lounge to be used on every match night.

“And we’ve received an offer from fans that if there is an empty night than the supporters would like to take it on themselves. We would be delighted to do that.”

McLean said: “We are new, we are fresh, we are transparent and we are seriously looking forward to the new season.”
