TriNations: Scotland 3, England 4 (at Peffermill)

Scotland’s under-16 boys lost 4-3 to highly-rated England as they opened their campaign in the TriNations event at Peffermill.

But coach Chris Duncan was pleased with the performance against a strong side which recently beat a Dutch combine.

Clydesdale player Struan Walker netted a double with Charlie Jack of Inverleith claiming the other goal.

And Cameron Bosi of Stewart’s Melville College produced a series of great saves, including stopping a penalty flick, in a thrilling game watched by a big crowd.

The Scots now face a double-header against Ireland on Monday (1pm) and Tuesday (12.30pm) and Duncan said: “We had a poor second quarter but praise to the boys.

“They knew it themselves and they picked it up against a really strong England side.

“They should be really pleased with their efforts and we hope to take that enthusiasm into the games against Ireland.”

Duncan, who is also head of hockey at Edinburgh Academy, said they have some really talented players in the squad and added: “We’re trying to play attacking hockey which they enjoy playing.

“Ten of the squad will be here next year so we have a lot to build on here.”
