The intellectual property specialists Marks & Clerk say that there is a rise in the number of trade mark applications which originate in Scotland.

This they say shows a ‘strong and sustained entrepreneurial spirit’ especially in the food and drink sector.

Last year there was an 11.7% increase in the number of applications from Scotland made up of a lot of food and drink manufacturers such as craft brewers and distillers.Ā Scotland is outperforming both Wales and Northern Ireland.

Campbell Newell, a partner in Marks & Clerkā€™s Edinburgh office, said : “Scotland has a long and proud tradition of producing ambitious entrepreneurs, and we continue to punch above our weight in so many sectors ā€“ be it food and drink or tourism. Despite a climate of economic and political uncertainty, weā€™re seeing a very healthy Scottish picture, and businesses are recognising the importance of protecting and investing in their trade marks.

ā€œWeā€™re seeing this replicated across our Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen offices, so there is every reason to be encouraged.

ā€œItā€™s a huge tribute to Scotlandā€™s entrepreneurial spirit, particularly in the Scottish brewery sector which has doubled since 2010 with 115 breweries operating in 2016, compared to just 55 in 2010. Start-up breweries have played a major role in that.

ā€œIt also further serves to reaffirm the countryā€™s status as a leading marketplace for ambitious young businesses looking to make their mark.ā€
