Stephen Tiffney as been urging his management team to find a suitable opponent to move his career forward as he bids to land a British title shot.

The Edinburgh-born featherweight from Newtongrange now has his chance to impress against a former British title contender.

Tiffney goes in against Troy James from Coventry on the Capital Collison bill at Meadowbank on Friday, October 6.

And the bout represents a step-up in class for the ambitious Scottish-based fighter who trains at Edinburgh’s busy Lochend gym.

Tiffney has so far won all his seven fights, three inside the distance. His last outing was in March this year when he beat Ricky Starkey on a technical knockout in the second round of a scheduled six round bout.

James, aged 33, nicknamed Terryfying, has fought on 24 occasions winning 20 of them, five with knockouts. His last fight was against Damian Lawniczak in February and he won on points over six rounds.

Previously, he beat Michael Mooney on points over four rounds in December and lost his British super-featherweight challenge against Liam Walsh in April last year in the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round contest on a technical knockout.

James has also lost an English super-featherweight title challenge but he has twice won the Midlands Area super-featherweight crown.

The match represents a major challenge for the 28-year-old Scot who launched his paid career two years ago.

He said: “I believe in my own ability and have been after a step-up for a while.

“He (James) likes to move about a bit and come inside and I come forward a lot. I know at some point we are going to meet in the middle of the ring.

“It will be exciting and or course I believe I have the better chin. Usually I am not the taller fighter but on this occasion I am.

“There is only a small difference but he is a stocky guy and he can punch but I can punch as well.

“We’ll need to wait and find out (at Meadowbank).”

Tickets are now on sale online at tickets-scotland.com/ or from boxers on the bill.
