Over 35 events are scheduled to take place in Midlothian’s first ‘Heritage Week’, taking place between 1 and 7 May.

Organised by Midlothian Tourism Forum and Midlothian Council, Midlothian Heritage Week is part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. The week’s activities include talks, walks, workshops, exhibitions, tours and concerts across a variety of Midlothian venues.

Participating venues include the National Mining Museum Scotland, Crichton Collegiate Church, Arniston House, Cousland Smiddy, Dalkeith Museum and Rosslyn Chapel all of which are within easy reach of Edinburgh City Centre.

Highlights include tours of Newbattle Abbey College, Penicuik House, Arniston House, and Penicuik’s Paper Making Heritage Centre, exhibitions at Gorebridge Library exploring the First World War through the role of local author, social commentator and activist Annie S. Swan, ‘treasures from Midlothian Council’s archive’ at Dalkeith Library and guided walks around Penicuik Old Town Centre, exploring the built heritage of Gorebridge and taking in Roslin Gunpowder Mill. Special openings of Cousland Smiddy, Soutra Aisle and St Mary’s Church in Dalkeith, are all scheduled, as well as medieval music at Rosslyn Chapel, music through the ages at Crichton Collegiate Church and a screening of ‘Murder at the Neuk’ in Dalkeith Corn Exchange.
