It’s All in a Knight’s Work for MAMA
Will Tim The Necromancer cleft mighty rocks asunder, as if putty in his bare hands, with thunderbolts echoing across the haunted wastes of Musselburgh Racecourse?
Will the blood-spattered furry white bunny with slasher incisors wreak haunting havoc amongst the noble burgers of Auld Reekie’s suburbs?
Will this interminable turgid prose never cease?
None shall pass until the riddles are solved. Two answers you must posses to appease the portal keeper before crossing the rickety Bridge of Destiny. Three answers must ye abhor. Less than three but no more than one is to no avail. One and then one more only is meet fit and proper.
Firstly, what is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow? African or European? Aaghhh!
In a world full of ups and downs, with unpredictable leaders doing unpredictable things, Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association (MAMA) invites everyone to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” with their 2017 production of Monty Python’s Spamalot!
Bringing West-End experience to the role, actor and Longniddry local Justin Skelton directs the East Lothian premier of this hilarious show, combining local talent with professional knowledge to bring Monty Python to life on the Brunton Stage.
Join the hapless King Arthur and his “horse”, Patsy as they gallop (to the sound of banging coconuts) around the nation, including a stop in the Honest Toun, in search of the Holy Grail.
Along the way, the audience will meet some old favourites, including the Knights who say “Ni”, some French Taunters, the Black Knight and Prince Herbert – as well as some new additions designed especially for the show – the Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls, some confused Finnish villagers and an exasperated history professor.
Spamalot is a fan favourite with Python’s followers, however it’s also a great show for fans of any musical theatre – winning 3 Tony Awards on Broadway, including the award for Best Musical in 2005.
Featuring well known songs, including Knights of the Round Table and Brave Sir Robin, and additional numbers in an impressive and challenging score written by John du Prez, Neil Innes and with a book by Eric Idle, this is a production not to say “Ni” to!

MAMA has been entertaining the audiences of East Lothian since 1951. Now in its 66th year, it remains truly a community group, with members of all ages taking part in 2 annual productions – the January revue and spring musical.
