The 80s are back!

Today’s council meeting will begin at 10am under the stern gaze of the Lord Provost, the Rt Hon Donald Wilson.

You are reminded that he is running in the London Marathon later this year, and that you can support him by donating here. The Lord Provost is raising funds for the One City Trust. He explained: “The One City Trust, of which I am President, fights against inequality and exclusion in Edinburgh. I am passionate about the need for all the citizens of this great and affluent City to be included in its success and opportunities and I hope I can raise a significant amount.”

Today’s meeting will include ratification of the new Depute Council Leader, Councillor Frank Ross who was elected as SNP Group Leader on Tuesday evening. Read more here.

The Council papers for the meeting are here where, for some of you, the most important motion is this one from Councillor Munro:

By Councillor Munro – Hibernian Football Club – Scottish League Cup Final

“Council congratulates all at Hibernian Football Club on achieving a place in this year’s Scottish League Cup final.

Council instructs officers to work with the club to ensure that Edinburgh can fully support them on cup final day, Sunday 13th March.”

Members of Edinburgh’s business community gathered this week to hear the highlights, insights and lessons learned from a successful Scottish businesswoman with a distinguished career which has ranged across many leading Scottish firms and organisations.

Linda Urquhart, Chairman of leading law firm Morton Fraser, was the guest speaker at a business breakfast at The Merchant Company whose 500 plus members represent 43 different professions in the Capital.

The event was held at The Merchants’ Hall in Hanover Street and guests heard Linda give an overall view of her career highlights which included ten years as Chief Executive at Morton Fraser before taking up her present role as Chairman.  She is a former solicitor and partner in the firm and is now a non-practising member of the Law Society of Scotland.

A former Chairman of CBI Scotland, Linda is a board member of CBI and Scottish Enterprise, Chairman of Investors in People Scotland, co-chair of the Scottish Government’s Fair Work Convention, a non-executive director of Adam & Company (the Scottish private bank) and Edinburgh Airport Limited, and a member of the Edinburgh Business Forum. Linda is also a Trustee of Marie Curie and of the Royal Scottish Academy Foundation, and an Ambassador for Girlguiding UK.

Linda received an OBE for services to business in Scotland in the New Year Honours List 2012.

Julie Grieve, Member of The Merchant Company Membership Committee, said:

“It was fascinating to hear Linda’s insights on her career and highlight the importance of building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and the business and the wider community.”

We went to Constitution Street the other evening to catch sight of the City of Literature projections on the Royal Bank of Scotland building opposite Creative Exchange. The Leith Poetry Projections are part of a worldwide range of poetry from all the eleven cities of literature being exhibited from 3-13 March.

Sadly, someone had not checked the projector, as it was a bit skew-wiff!

We got some photos, but if you have better images then do share them with us on Twitter by emailing us at editor@theedinburghreporter.co.uk

Edinburgh was UNESCO’s first City of Literature in 2004. This is meant to recognise a city with a great literary past and the literary projects of today.
