John Swinney appeared on the steps at Bute House on Wednesday as First Minister designate after being voted in by MSPs in the chamber at Holyrood.

Alongside him his wife, Elizabeth Quigley, stood smiling for the cameras in Charlotte Square.

Ms Quigley has Multiple Sclerosis as Mr Swinney mentioned in parliament on Tuesday. The couple had arrived by car at the rear of Bute House, making their way through the Georgian building for a brief photo call. Mr Swinney rejected a call for any kiss or embrace with a laugh, and soon it was time to go back inside and get ready for Wednesday.

Tomorrow Mr Swinney will attend a swearing in ceremony at the Court of Session after which he is expected to convene a reshuffled cabinet, probably at Bute House. And then on Thursday he will appear at his inaugural First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood as First Minister.
