Portobello has two Under12 boys selected to play basketball at an international tournament in Andorra in May for Under 12s Basketball Scotland. They both play for the Kings (Edinburgh Basketball Club) and they are the only two Under12s selected from Edinburgh! The boys need to raise money to help fund the training and the trip. The boys will be doing a basketball marathon on Monday 28 March (Easter Monday) from 10.30 at Rosefield Park. The Porty boys Michal and Jude will be playing several hours and would welcome tour help and support through the day. You can come and play with them and leave few coins in the basket. The Portobello and Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership has decided to run with another You Decide!this year to decide on the Community Grants Fund to give out small grants to local projects and get people together who want to do good things to make their neighbourhoods better. The event will be on Saturday 14 May in Portobello Town Hall and the closing date for applications is Friday 22 April.
After a very successful event with Portobello Timebank a few weeks back, some of us are intending to do some more Brunstane Burn clearing on Saturday 2 April. Portobello Market is back again in Brighton Park on Saturday 2 April, 9.30am – 1.30pm. Throughout the morning, from around 9.30/10am, there will be an ongoing Easter egg hunt (until they run out!). Prepare to come along next weekend for a fantastic array of locally produced foods, plants, crafts and campaign advice from Amnesty and RSPB.

Every now and then there is a spike in crime or anti-social behaviour but we can and do have success in solving or preventing more happening and keeping each other safe. One of Police Scotland’s excellent school link officers succeeded in tracing and reporting multiple culprits responsible for smashing forty windows at a local school at an estimated to cost £5,500. Best when this kind of behaviour is nipped in the bud, with the help of people prepared to report at the time and tell what they know. The police also succeeded in catching four burglars in the act of turning over a house, thanks to the swift action of a member of the public on phoning 999 immediately when she/he saw someone acting suspiciously. Effective policing needs out eyes, ears – and intelligence – in all senses of that word. .
