Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempted robbery at the weekend which happened  around 11:20pm last night on Portobello High Street.

An 18-year-old woman left the number 26 Lothian Bus near Bayne’s Bakers and started to walk towards Bath Street. She was about to cross the road onto Brighton Place when a man approached her from behind and grabbed her handbag.

A struggle ensued and the woman managed to prevent the suspect from stealing her belongings. He then ran off on Portobello High Street in the direction of Seafield.

Police have been carrying out various local enquiries following the incident and officers are now asking anyone who can assist with their investigation to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall with a thin build and in his late teens. He spoke with a local accent and wore dark jogging bottoms or baggy jeans and a black zipped hooded top with the hood up.

Detective Constable John McShane from Police Scotland said: “Enquiries are ongoing into this incident and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Portobello High Street around the time of this offence to please contact police.

“We are very keen to trace the suspect as quickly as possible and ensure he is brought to justice.”
