It’s only in January that the Scottish National Gallery mounts its exhibition of Turner paintings. Why?

These works, bequeathed to the Gallery by the distinguished collector Henry Vaughan, span Turner’s career, from his early topographical wash drawings to his atmospheric sketches of continental Europe from the 1830s and ‘40s. Vaughan stipulated in his bequest that these delicate watercolours should be ‘exhibited to the public all at one time, free of charge, during the month of January’ and his wishes have been faithfully adhered to for over 100 years.

Free no booking required.

Today at the Cameo they are showing Foxcatcher. This is a story we had never heard but it has to be Steve Carrell’s best performance. It is gripping dramatic and utterly surprising. Do not read any more than the brief synopsis below before getting along to the cinema to see it. Booking for the Cameo here.

The film tells the true story of brothers Mark and Dave Schultz (Tatum and Ruffalo), wrestling champions taken under the wing of multimillionaire John du Pont (Carell). Du Pont invites the pair to join his Team Foxcatcher and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and Mark in particular falls under the spell of his wealth, drive and apparent generosity.

We’re not even going to show you the trailer. Just go and see it.

Councillor Maureen Child has updated us on the planning position of the Baileyfield site in Portobello:

The week before Christmas, planning consent was granted for Aldi’s detailed application for a store on Portobello High Street, the high controversial Scottish Power/Baileyfield site.  Committee also approved in principle a housing application from Crudens on the rest of the site. The full report can be found here: Report

There were a large number of objections and also a large number of supportive comments on the joint application.  Broadly, most of the objections related to the store.  However, in planning terms the weight of three previous Reporter decisions – the most recent one upholding the Committee’s decision to refuse consent for a Lidl on the derelict Appleyard garage site – firmly established that this site was an acceptable ‘edge of town centre’ site for a store.

In my own view, there was nothing to be gained for our community by pretending otherwise.  I voted for a continuation, because I felt the design was simply not good enough.  Some will be pleased, some outraged and others indifferent – no doubt.  You can’t please all of the people all of the time.
