The Delines photo good band

New-country/soul group The Delines, lead by Willy Vlautin of Richmond Fontaine will be in Edinburgh next month after filling venues across the UK earlier this year.

Armed with their album COLFAX which has already been cited as “album of the year” plus some covers and new material the band is ready once again to take the UK by storm. UNCUT has given the album 9/10, Line of Best Fit  8.5/10 and Q has called singer Amy Boone “a damaged Dusty Springfield” with a 4 star review.

The Delines are led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations TX), alongside the keyboard work of Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists (replaced by Cory Gray of the Dandy Wharhols for the UK tour) for Nov as well as fellow Portlanders Sean Oldham and songwriter/novelist Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine). Vlautin is no stranger to critical acclaim in the UK, enjoying cult success and stellar reviews in the past.

The seeds for Colfax were sown in 2012 when Vlautin, so beguiled by Boone’s heartbreakingly longing, yet resilient voice, wrote an album worth songs and built a band around her. Recorded at Flora Recording and produced with John Askew (Dodos, Alela Diane) in Portland, Oregon, Colfax tells haunting, modern stories through the musical lens of soul and roots music of decades past. “Amy’s voice has always stopped me in my tracks,” says Vlautin. “It’s all heart, beat-up but tough, vulnerable and worn. I’ve always wanted to work with her, so when she gave me the chance I spent a year writing songs for her. I wanted to write songs like her voice: songs that might have a drink in the morning but they still make it to work.”

Willy Vlautin is also currently promoting his 4th novel, The Free, for Faber and Faber, which has seen the best reactions yet from fellow authors and musicians alike, Drive By Truckers frontman Patterson Hood is a huge fan and even named his newest track after one of Willy’s characters. Look for a new deluxe edition of the album out this November.
