The Royal Mile-based Museum of Childhood, which is owned and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council, has invited the artist Kate Davis to host a free talk on her work and inspirations at the City Art Centre at 3pm on 17 July 2014. Davis has just finished an exhibition of work relating to playing with makeshift toys.

The Museum’s doll collection, which belonged to London cashier Edward Lovett (1852 – 1933), has been housed at the Museum of Childhood since 1961.

Edward Lovett was a member of the Folklore Society and became an authority on dolls, particularly makeshift dolls made for poorer children who did not have commercially made toys.

The Causey is a triangular shaped traffic island just off East Cross Causeway. People have big ideas for it and there is a workshop this Saturday to discuss plans for their next big event. They ran the very exciting and successful Southsiders event last year.

This year’s Edinburgh Mela programme brings together artists from Poland, Zimbawe, Ghana, Jamaica, China, Gambia, Rajasthan, Cuba, the Ukraine and Kenya, whilst still keeping traditional and contemporary South Asian culture at its heart. The World Dance Feste tent, one of the only platforms dedicated to dance throughout the official Edinburgh Festivals, will showcase dance styles from traditional Indian Kathak and Spanish flamenco through Brazillian football-influenced dance and dark contemporary hip hop.

There are two new dance commissions this year: From Here To There by influential Edinburgh choreographer Merav Israel and Capicúa, featuring Spanish flamenco legend Carmen Ledesma; The King of Ghosts, the Mela’s major celebratory commission, teams up the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with rising star Soumik Datta in a cinematic musical spectacular.
