Police Scotland today welcomed the 30-month prison sentence handed out to an Edinburgh man who was last month found guilty of sending inappropriate text messages to a teenager.

Craig McMurdo, who is 49-years-old and from the Gorebridge area was found guilty of sending a 14-year-old girl from Wales explicit text messages containing naked images of himself and other men between December 2011 and August 2012

A jury last month convicted him on four charges of child abuse and of possessing indecent images of children.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register, and yesterday at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court he was given a 30-month custodial sentence.

Detective Inspector Brian Stuart, part of the Police Scotland team that handled the investigation, said: “This prison sentence is further evidence that our officers will continue to robustly pursue all those involved in criminal activity so that they are brought to justice.

“The crimes carried out by Mr McMurdo will have greatly disturbed members of the public and our communities are a safer place with this individual behind bars.”

Anyone with information on criminal activity taking place in their area can contact Police Scotland on 101 or, alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
