A 21 year old woman has died and four people are in hospital after an accident on the A1 near Dunbar in East Lothian which occurred at 7.45pm last night.

The collision involved a Ford Ka and a Ford Focus.

Firefighters attended the scene and had to use hydraulic cutting gear to free the people from the vehicles.

Three of the injured parties were airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by a search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer, near Alnwick in Northumberland. The other casualty was taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

The road was closed for several hours while Road Police officers dealt with.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in East Lothian are investigating following a fatal road collision on the A1.

“The incident happened around 7.40pm on Thursday 9th January near to the Torness Power station when a Ford Ka was involved in a collision with a Ford Focus.

“A 21-year-old female passenger, who was travelling within the Ka, sustained serious injuries and passed away at the scene.

“The 21-year-old female driver of the Ka and another female passenger, aged 20, were also taken to hospital along with the 23-year-old male driver and 20-year-old female passenger from the Focus after all occupants suffered various injuries.

“Road Policing officers carried out a thorough inquiry at the scene and the road was closed for around six hours.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has information that can assist police with their investigation is asked to come forward immediately.”
