The Star Flyer in St Andrew Square has been closed after a section of seating broke off and crashed to the ground last night narrowly missing spectators below.

Thankfully no-one was injured, but the Star Flyer has been closed for safety checks following the incident and is expected to remain closed for the rest of today.

The £7.50 fairground attraction which stretches 200 feet into the sky had been closed for maintenance but had reopened around 5pm yesterday.

Police Scotland sealed the area off and said that the council would assess the situation.

A statement from operators Underbelly issued at midday said:-“Public safety is of paramount importance to Edinburgh’s Christmas. The Star Flyer will therefore be closed to allow for full safety checks to be carried out, and in anticipation of strong winds forecast for later today.

“We expect it to be re-opened on Sunday December 15. We apologise for any inconvenience and tickets for today can either be refunded or exchanged for another date at the box office, the number is 0844 545 8252.”
