EADIE SALUTES WIMBLEDON HERO MURRAY
Jim Eadie, MSP for Edinburgh Southern, has today tabled a parliamentary motion following Andy Murray’s fantastic achievement in winning the men’s singles title at Wimbledon yesterday.
Whilst acknowledging the scale of Murray’s triumph in that he is the first Briton to win the men’s competition in 77 years, as well as being the first Scot in over 100 years, Mr Eadie had additionally commended Murray’s recent efforts in raising funds for the Royal Marsden hospital.
In a statement, Jim Eadie said:-“Everyone in Scotland today is walking a little bit taller as a result of Andy Murray’s outstanding achievement.
“Murray’s monumental display yesterday against a player as formidable as Djokovic truly was a joy to behold, and I am sure his victory will live long in our memories.
“His impressive work on the court is matched off-court through his recent efforts to raise funds for the Royal Marsden hospital, showing yet again that he is an outstanding role model to young people throughout Scotland and beyond.”
The motion reads:-
“That the Parliament warmly congratulates Andy Murray on becoming the first Briton to triumph in the Wimbledon gentlemen’s singles event since Fred Perry in 1936 and the first Scottish champion since 1896; notes the magnitude of his straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic, the current world number one and six-time grand slam champion; commends Novak Djokovic for his sportsmanship throughout the competition; applauds Murray for his efforts in raising funds for the Royal Marsden Hospital, and hopes that what it considers Murray’s exceptional achievement will continue to inspire people throughout Scotland and beyond to participate in sport.”
