The Festival and King’s Theatres have just announced their Autumn/Winter 2012/13 season along with future programming that includes cult drag ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Royal Ballet star Carlos Acosta and the National Theatre’s smash-hit play, War Horse.

Critically-acclaimed as the “theatrical event of the decade” (The Times), War Horse will have its Scottish dates at the Festival Theatre in early 2014, as part of the National Theatre’s nine-month tour of the UK starting in September 2013. The international smash-hit play based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel will attract audiences from all over Scotland to see the moving drama that brings breathing, galloping, full-scale horses to life on the stage.

War Horse is a life affirming story about friendship, courage and family, which appeals to all ages. This is a production that brings the family together, we get people coming back again and again, and they always have the same reaction. It awakens something in you,”

Chris Harper, Producer, National Theatre.
In February 2013, the cult drag ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo return to the Festival Theatre following their success in 2010 as the best-selling dance show of that year. In April, Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta will stage his only dates in Scotland, with two exclusive performances of On Before, danced by Acosta and featuring new and

existing choreography by some of the world’s leading dance makers including Russell Maliphant, Kim Brandstrup, Edwaard Liang and Miguel Altunaga. Tickets for both dance shows are on sale now, with the on-sale date for War Horse to be confirmed shortly.

On these new show announcements, Duncan Hendry, Chief Executive, says:

“We are absolutely delighted to be bringing these three world class productions to Edinburgh. This will be an exclusive opportunity to see these companies in Scotland and hopefully these visits demonstrate the ambition we have for the programming of international work at our venues”.

War Horse, Carlos Acosta and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo follow an exciting Autumn/Winter 2012/13 season at the Festival and King’s Theatres that includes the Susan Boyle musical, I Dreamed A Dream, Aberdeen Performing Arts’ adaptation of Robin Jenkins’ classic Scottish novel, The Cone Gatherers, smash-hit comedy The Ladykillers, direct from the West End, Scottish Opera’s new production of The Magic Flute, Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty and the King’s panto for 2012/13: Mother Goose.

The Edinburgh Reporter’s John Hislop went along to a press day about War Horse and shot this tiny little video:-

The Botanics will screen the UK Premiere of the ground-breaking documentary Apaporis. The event, on Saturday, August 3 will be attended by the film’s director, Antonio Dorado, who will participate in question and answer sessions.

Selling more tickets in Colombian cinemas than any other documentary in the country’s history, Apaporis is a travelogue through an Amazon jungle unknown even to the vast majority of Colombians. Following in the footsteps of ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes, it traces the journey from Mitu to Apaporis, documenting indigenous knowledge and revealing ancient myths and secrets.

The film pays homage to the botanical knowledge of indigenous peoples and highlights the conflicts that are threatening their unique culture and language. The film was inspired by the book One River written by Wade Davis, a student of Schultes. It has been described by Variety Magazine, USA, as “an overwhelming wave of information and images”.

Further information about the film, to be screened in the RBGE Lecture Theatre, on Inverleith Row, can be found on the website apaporis.com. Tickets are available from the John Hope Gateway shop and RBGE shop online at a price of £7.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the annual emergency services open day today from 11am – 3pm at McDonald Road fire station.

Hosted by the newly formed Scottish Fire and Rescue Service this free day welcomes locals to enjoy a selection of displays, demonstrations and fun activities run by the stations firefighters and other partners.

Firefighter Neil Bertram from McDonald Road fire station, has organised this event for the last 4 years, said:

“The emergency services open day is always a great day out and it’s FREE!

Last year we had almost 800 people through our doors at McDonald Road Fire Station. Located off Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

“The Police, Scottish Ambulance Service and Coastguard will all be represented on the day. It’s a great opportunity to come along, see an operational station and find out more about the emergency services and the role they play in keeping our communities safe.

“From our side we will have fire appliances on display. The height appliance will be working throughout the event, our community safety vehicle (CSV) will also be used and staff from our Community Safety team will be on hand to give advice and answer questions on Fire Safety in the Home and offer free visits. The training centre will be carrying out fire extinguisher and fire blanket demonstrations. The public will also have the opportunity to wear a Breathing Apparatus set and enter our breathing apparatus training pod, allowing people to get a taste of navigating in zero visibility to rescue a casualty.

The feedback was great from the public last year, so NEW this year will be displays from crews demonstrating their working at heights skills and one of the `Phoenix crews` who are our young firefighters and they will be demonstrating ladder and pump drills.

“We also hope to raise money to help both our chosen charities again this year who are, `The Fire Fighters Charity` and `Hillview Children’s Unit` who offer intensive support and respite to children and young people persons with disabilities.

“Hopefully the weather will be kind to us again this year and we would urge people to pop along for what promises to be an educational, enjoyable and most importantly, family fun day out.”
