The Edinburgh Mela 2013 programme has just been announced. In this interview with George Ward for The Edinburgh Reporter, Artistic Director Chris Purnell reveals some of the acts that will be performing this year, and Lucy Frankel from Vegware explains one of the green elements of the event.

The Edinburgh Meal is billed as a festival of world music, dance fashion food and fun and it takes place at Leith Links from 31 August to 1 September 2013.

The organisers proclaim the 2013 festival will have a special headline act:-“We’re delighted to announce a very special headline act this year. Dance legends The Orb, with Ghanian master drummers (and Mela favourites)Kakatsitsi will help round off our Sunday evening celebrations, with an utterly amazing show which has only ever been performed at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. Full info on that performance, and our other major music acts, on our Main Stage page. For the second year, we’re able to commission new dance works for the Mela World Dance Feste stage. Star Crossed, our major new piece, is a fiery, passionate reinterpretation of the Romeo and Juliet story told through Argentinian tango and Brazilian Capoeira. We’ve also got dance from China, Spain and India; classical, contemporary, hip hop, stilt work, parkour, and flamenco. The highlights are up now on our World Dance Feste page. Our Mix Stage, another new innovation last year, proved so popular that we’ve expanded it. Check out the freshest beatboxing, DJ sets and live hip hop on our Mix Stage page. We’re also taking steps to make this the most environmentally-friendly festival ever. Find out about our sustainable packaging partners and our cycling initiative at our Greening the Mela page. We’ll be rolling out the whole programme online over the next few days. In the meantime, keep in touch with us on Twitter and Facebook.”
