The Shining

Everybody knows The Shining. The story of a man driven to madness and murder while working as the winter caretaker at an isolated hotel in the Rocky Mountains is one of the most famous and influential horror films ever made. And now you get to see it the way you were meant to.

For the first time, cinemas across the country will be showing the US edit of the film, with an extra 25 minutes of previously removed footage. The BFI is behind the release of this new digital transfer, which gives us a deeper look into the tale of Jack Torrance and his psychic son, Danny.

This longer cut of The Shining has never been released in the UK before, either in cinemas or on home video (as it was called back then!) but if you have watched the film on ITV in recent years then the extra scenes will be familiar. Even so, this is an event that is not to be missed. Edinburgh’s Filmhouse will be screening The Shining from this Friday, November 2nd, with special Halloween previews on 31st October. What better way is there to enjoy the spookiest night of the year than with the perfect scary movie?

Shine on, you crazy diamond

Directed by Stanley Kubrick from Stephen King’s novel, The Shining stars Jack Nicholson as the iconic Jack Torrance, with Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and Danny Lloyd.

The Filmhouse is also the only cinema in Scotland showing the fantastic documentary film Room 237, which explores some of the theories about hidden meanings within The Shining. Sounds like a perfect double feature to me.
