Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, directed by Tommy Smith with Brian Kellock on piano tonight at the Queen’s Hall. This is what they say on their website:-

Edward Kennedy Ellington was a unique contributor to 20th century music. Composer, pianist, band leader – he reached out and touched a worldwide audience in a fashion that may never be equalled. His music was evocative and emotional, richly textured in mood, lyrical simplicity through to dense complexity. There were songs and suites, tone poems and the blues.

Ellington’s legacy is vast, covering six decades and all types of jazz composition. Scottish National Jazz Orchestra – winners of Best Jazz Ensemble at the 2012 UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards – have chosen a variety of pieces spanning Ellington’s output with which to pay their respects.

This concert will include works like Happy Go Lucky Local, Sepia Panorama, Concerto For Cootie, Overture from The Nutcracker Suite, Sunset & The Mocking Bird and Le Sucrier fromThe Queen’s SuiteNever No Lament and five movements from the Peer Gynt Suite.

Pre-concert Talk, 6.45 pm (free to ticket holders): Members of the SNJO discuss Ellington’s work and legacy.” Tickets here.
