Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at an Edinburgh bookmaker.

The incident happened around 8.40pm on Friday 12 August 2011 at the Ladbrokes betting shop on West Maitland Street.

Two members of staff and one customer were within the store when a man entered and presented a small handgun before demanding money.

The man then made off from the store with a three-figure sum of cash and was lost to sight by staff.

Police are now appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall with a slim build and pale skin. He was wearing a dark jacket with hood up pulled tight, blue jeans and possibly white trainers. He spoke with a local accent.

A police spokesman said: ‘The staff were obviously extremely alarmed after being presented with a handgun and we are keen to speak with anyone who can help us identify the suspect.

‘Given the time of night and the location the robbery took place, there are potentially a number of members of witnesses who can help with enquiries.

‘Anyone who was in or around West Maitland Street at 8.40pm last night and remembers seeing someone matching his description, or who has any other information that can assist with our investigation should contact police immediately.’

Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
