Friends of the Earth Scotland has responded to reports that the City of Edinburgh Council has voted to continue with the Edinburgh trams project last night.

Stan Blackley, Chief Executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, who led a deputation to the full meeting of the Council this morning had urged Councillors to “be bold, be brave, be sensible” and to “help create the beginnings of a 21st Century transport network for our capital city”.

Stan Blackley, Chief Executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:

“This decision is the right one for Edinburgh. The trams will, once delivered, reduce car journeys and traffic congestion, improve on-street air quality and reduce pollution levels, and help to cut carbon emissions. The decision to take the initial tram line to St. Andrew’s Square is plain common sense, and I applaud those City of Edinburgh Councillors who saw sense and voted for this.”

  1. Stan, much as I am pro public transport and want a greener city – the trams are not the right way to do this. WE CANNOT AFFORD THIS as a solution.
Have some sense. One tram line does not deliver sustainable transport. Especially when it is at the expense of all other public transport and our schools etc. etc……

  2. We suppose that in the same way that the Dublin Tram has been extended over the years the Edinburgh Tram might be too? Would that then be a way towards attaining sustainability?
