The Newsroom, a city-centre bar and diner located on Edinburgh’s Leith Street, recently commissioned up and coming 24-year-old artist and exhibitions curator, Steven Cox to create some contemporary, eye-catching imagery on the venue’s walls. Now these contemporary art works are complete, Newsroom is encouraging people to come and view Steven’s work in their relaxed environment, over a coffee or cocktail.
With a combination of spray paint, handmade stencils and a great degree of artistic flair, Steven has created a superb selection of multi-layered stencil style images depicting the likes of vintage telephones, speaker phones to a large scale figure reading a newspaper – all in keeping with the Newsroom theme.
Steven Cox commented: “My main inspiration came from various New York street artists whose work I’ve become really familiar with after several trips to the city. I wanted to adopt elements of the New York style whilst ensuring the imagery was also retro and vintage – in keeping with the Newsroom’s style.
“This was such an interesting project to be involved in. It’s great to see bars get involved in contemporary art because it opens up a whole new world to their customers who before, might not have gone to a traditional art gallery though are happy to check out the art work on the Newsroom’s walls over a few drinks! The plan is for new artwork to be added regularly, so do pop in and have a look.”
Edinburgh-based Steven recently completed a postgraduate degree from Edinburgh College of Art and already in his role of exhibition curator has exhibited artists as famous as the 2010 Turner Prize nominees The Otolith Group. Steven also takes pride in organising exhibitions showcasing emerging and established artists from Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow and New York for his art platform Hunted Projects.
This platform enables artists to exhibit their contemporary artwork to a much wider audience, with the aim of promoting art in more public places such as the Newsroom bar, which is a more relaxed and comfortable setting for people to view and discuss art. Steven also works as an art handler and installation assistant for the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh and takes on regular commissions.
