Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a 94-year-old woman had her handbag stolen in the Barnton area of the Capital.

The incident happened around 4.30pm on Friday, in Barnton Court. The woman was walking with her 92-year-old brother when they were approached by a person wearing a motorbike helmet, who snatched her handbag and ran off.

Her brother chased after the suspect and saw them getting on a motorbike driven by another person, who then drove off along Barnton Grove towards Queensferry Road.

The suspect, whose sex is unknown, is described as white, 5ft 5ins tall, and was wearing a pale yellow anorak, and a dark blue motorbike helmet. The motorbike is described as being either silver or white.

A police spokesman said: “The victim is in a frail condition, and it is lucky that she did not suffer any injury as a result of having her handbag snatched from her shoulder.

“Nevertheless she was left understandably shaken as a result of this incident, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspects, who were last seen heading towards Queensferry Road on a motorbike.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time, who either witnessed the incident or who thinks they saw the suspects driving away from the scene, should contact police immediately.

“Anyone else who has any information that can help our inquiries should also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
