When Karen Denoon read about her friend Lisa MacDonald on Facebook and decided to run Race for Life she persuaded a group of school friends to run together in what has turned into a reunion with a difference.

Her friend Lisa, 36, from Edinburgh had no idea that she had breast cancer until after her son Fraser was born in June 2008. She credits her son for saving her life as doctors told her if she had not been pregnant the lump in her breast would have taken up to ten years to grow the size that it did.

When she saw Lisa’s posts on Facebook Karen was inspired to sign up to do the Race for Life. “Lisa has been through so much and truly inspired me. Hearing her story and the recent death of my good friend’s sister at only 39 years old prompted me to sign up. After what other people have been through it’s really not much to ask. I’m hoping to hit my target for sponsorship as well (£500), only £45 to go.”

It was the first time the group of former Firhill pupils will have seen each other since they left high school in 1991/1992 when they raced together yesterday at South Queensferry. The Edinburgh Race for Life 5K & 10K take place in Holyrood on 19 June. You can get more details here.
