A 45-year-old woman has died after suffering serious burns in a severe fire at a flat in Edinburgh which broke out yesterday.

The woman, who has not yet been named, died of her injuries in hospital after being pulled from her property by firefighters called to the scene of the blaze on Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out shortly after 5pm prompting multiple calls to Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Control from anxious residents.

On arrival, fire crews discovered the property in Wardieburn Street West, in the Granton area of the city well alight.

Firefighters from Crewe Toll and McDonald Road fire stations said conditions were very severe with a well-established fire in the first floor flat.  They forced entry to the property and crews using breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose reel (HPHR), discovered and rescued a female from inside the flat.

Firefighters treated the woman, who had very severe burns, until the ambulance service arrived.  She was then taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but tragically died later that night as a result of her serious burn injuries.

At the height of the blaze, more than 15 firefighters used six breathing apparatus personnel and 2HPHRs and forced entry to all five other flats in the block to check for fire spread.

Fortunately, no one else was hurt in the fire.
