Eight people had to be rescued by firefighters after a large fire in an Edinburgh tenement in the Leith area of the city.

The fire broke out in the basement of the common stair of a four storey property in Croall Place just after 4am this morning.

One couple were rescued from the roof of the block by hydraulic platform which was also used by fire crews to help a family escape through a window.

An elderly female was given oxygen therapy by firefighters for smoke inhalation. Crews also led a man and woman down the stairs to safety and gave oxygen to the female who was suffering from the effects of smoke.

A spokesperson from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were confronted with thick black smoke on arrival. Their professional and swift response ensured that the multiple occupants from the block were safely rescued and removed from danger.

“It is fortunate that with the assistance of fire crews everyone was able to get out without suffering serious injury.”

Eighteen firefighters tackled the blaze which was extinguished just after 5am.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.
