Guy Pratt
Inglorious Bassterd at Frankensteins
1700 hrs
GUY Pratt is a veteran bass guitarist who has played for such great bands as Pink Floyd and Roxy Music.
He published a memoir called My Bass and Other Animals” a few years ago. Much of that content is recreated here.
However, a book cannot recreate his core talent of playing the bass and when he reels off a few classic bass lines to make a point, you feel grateful to be in the presence of such great artistry. This reviewer will be particularly grateful for Guy playing the beginning of “I shoulda loved you” by Narada Michael Walden.
Guy begins with a lovely look at Tripadvisor reviews before dealing with the matter of rock and roll. This is a gentle poke at being on stage and much of it is about being on stage in one of the biggest bands in the world. But Guy Pratt is self effacing enough to see himself as a hired hand and clearly never gets up himself.
It would be easy for even the most seasoned of comedians to struggle in the basement of a pub but Guy Pratt’s stage craft, presence and charm keeps the audience enthralled.
The long queue of admirers waiting to have their books signed shows the respect people have for Guy Pratt.
A wonderful raconteur, a fine fine bassist and a delightful hour of comedy and music.
